It's funny. When someone walks into my studio I never try and just sell them simply on how Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is great exercise or it's great for self-defense. We often get to a point in the conversation where they are excited and I say "Just come in for one class and you can see if you like it, I bet you will." Then I say "Don't take my word for it though, you have to physically try it, it's not about thugs fighting or getting your ass kicked, it's about finding out more about yourself." I don't put any pressure on them afterwards. Maybe the experts say I should and maybe they are right. I just feel if someone is interested they will try it or at least watch one class. Even if they don't like it they won't forget it. I mean, in what other area of a normal person's life will their body and mind be tested against another human being ultimately trying to submit them.

It takes a lot of courage to step on the mat. I often find people with no athletic background to be equally great students as those that come from another sport. I mean look at Ryan Hall, he is not a big strong guy, he is just simply a dedicated, smart, and flexible guy who understands how to use his body to the fullest extent. One wonders what the future of the sport holds as it grows so rapidly. Kids are now teaching on Youtube. I mean, I started teaching online in 2006 and was one a select few to get views. Now, jiu-jitsu is taught all over the world and all over the internet. I guess you can say the growth has its holes like anything else that grows, but overall it's a great thing for everyone.

We are lucky to be here at this time of life. I mean that with all sincerity. If we didn't have jiu-jitsu to come together and meet, no one would be reading this and I would not be writing this or about anything like this. I would be working a real job, one likely in which I would have more pressure and less satisfaction. I get to write BJJ books and study Jiu-Jitsu most of my days. I am utterly satisfied to watch our sport grow.

The passion of Jiu-Jitsu is real, it's hard to define, and harder to explain to someone who does not do it. Some say it's just a hobby or a recreational activity that is left on the mats and nowhere else.  I don't find jiu-jitsu to be at all a simple act, a chore, a duty, simply a workout, or just a simple form of fun or even a stress relief. It's more than that because we are more than that. And we are connected with the art and not separate from it. Jiu-jitsu is more of an attitude than an action, it is a way, a way of finding and revealing ourselves through an art-form larger than ourselves. We are not just bodies fighting, we are expressive beings, talking with our actions, forming attitudes with our movements, defining who we are and often paralleling our lives through our jiu-jitsu.

I kicked out a student a few months ago for hurting someone. I rarely do this. He apologized months later and begged me to come back. He seemed sincere, and said he had changed. I was dubious, but said okay. At first I watched him closely to make sure, and then when my back was turned I still watched out of the corner of my eye. To my surprise, over time, I could tell he had really changed. He was calm, relaxed, helping beginners, never reckless anymore. He was sincere and I was pleasantly surprised. It didn't mean much to me then as it does today as I write, but for some reason he said something I remembered. So I'll share it and leave you with what he told me the day he came back. I was trying in a nice way to get the point across that he needed to calm down if he was going to come back to our classes. I said to him "Jiu-jitsu can be applied to everything we do in life. It can help you accomplish other things. It's also great because it can even make you more calm." And he said "I don't do anything any more because of jiu-jitsu, everything I do now is through jiu-jitsu."

Thank you,

Ken Primola
